Can You Fund Your Retirement?

In January 2021, more than seven out of 10 workers were very or somewhat confident that they would have enough money to live comfortably throughout their retirement years. This was the highest confidence level since 2000 and a significant rebound from levels in March 2020 after the pandemic began. Overall, retirement confidence has trended upward since the Great Recession.

Workers who were somewhat confident they could fund their retirement: 41% in 2009, 37% in 2014, 37% in 2015, 43% in 2016, 42% in 2017, 47% in 2018, 44% in 2019, 42% in January 2020, 39% in March 2020, and 43% in 2021. Workers who were very confident: 13% in 2009, 18% in 2014, 22% in 2015, 21% in 2016, 18% in 2017, 17% in 2018, 23% in 2019, 27% in January 2020, 24% in March 2020, and 29% in 2021. Percentage of workers who felt somewhat or very confident about retirement was 54% in 2009, 55% in 2014, 59% in 2015, 64% in 2016, 60% in 2017, 64% in 2018, 67% in 2019, 69% in January 2020, 63% in March 2020, and 72% in 2021.
